日本とのつながり13〜相対化と安定〜

日本は鎌倉時代に元寇という事件を経験する。
1274年と1281年に元軍が日本を襲撃するも、失敗に終わる。
原因は暴風雨であるとも、鎌倉武士の奮闘であるともいわれる。
ともかく、日本は難を逃れた。

この元は、モンゴル帝国が南宋（現在の中国）を滅ぼしてからの呼び名である。
元はモンゴル人に支配されいてる国なのだ。
中国を支配した異民族はこれまでにもあったが、元が今までの支配者と違う点があった。

それは、中国文化に迎合しなかった点である。
それどころか、モンゴル人たちは「モンゴル人第一主義」を掲げて、モンゴル人以外の民族を徹底的に差別した。

かねてより中国といえば超大国であり、周辺国は中国の文化や統治制度を手本としてきた。
日本の平城京や平安京は唐の都を模して造営された。
中国は自分たちこそが世界の中心だという考えを持っていた。

しかし、モンゴル帝国は歴史上最大の版図を持った帝国である。
中国以外にもペルシャやイスラームの優れた文化を知っていた。
だから、中国文化を相対化でき、殊更おもねる必要はなかった。

そして、この広大な帝国によって洋の東西がネットワークで繋がった。
海の道、陸の道ができ、平和にやりとりができるようになった。
巨大帝国の中で文化が共存し、相互に交流が生まれた。

日本に襲いかかってきた国は、こんな国である。
これを日本が撃退できたところに、歴史の面白さがある。
