日本とのつながり12〜日本とトルコの友好〜

オスマン帝国は1299年に建国され、1922年に滅亡する。
この長さは注目に値する。
日本で言えば、鎌倉時代から大正にかけての時代となる。

そんなオスマン帝国の衰退が誰の目にも明らかになった頃、1890年の話である。

1887年に日本の皇族がコンスタンティノープルに訪問し、それへの答礼としてオスマン帝国の軍艦エルトゥールル号が日本にやってきた。

しかし、帰途についたこの軍艦は和歌山沖で沈没してしまう。
その時、大島村（現和歌山県串本町）の人々が身を投げ打って乗組員を救出した。
それは、決して裕福ではない自分たちの食料をも差し出してまで行われた救出劇となった。

時は過ぎて、1985年。
イラン・イラク戦争の中、イラクのサダム・フセイン大統領が48時間後にイラン領空を通過する航空機を無差別爆撃すると宣言。
日本政府は、イラン在住の日本人への救援機を出すことができなかった。
まさに、絶望的な状況にあった時、トルコ政府が救援機を出すと名乗りをあげた。
空港にはトルコ人もたくさんいたが、彼らも日本人をトルコ政府の救援機に乗せる選択をした。

これは一体、どういうわけだ？
当時の日本人は不思議に思った。
しかし、トルコの方ではエルトゥールル号事件の話は、教科書に載っていた。
トルコ人は、日本人への恩義を忘れてはいなかったのだ。

人々の想いは、時を越えることがある。

Indeed, when in a desperate situation, the Turkish government announced that it would issue a rescue plane.
There were many Turkish people at the airport, but they also chose to put Japanese on the Turkish government rescue plane.

What is this all about?
The Japanese at that time wondered.
However, in Turkey, the story of the Ertululu case was in a textbook.
The Turks did not forget their gratitude to the Japanese.
