９世紀、イスラーム帝国が全盛期を迎える。
首都バグダードは150万人の人口を抱え、西はモロッコに始まり東のインダス川に至るまで広大な版図を誇った。
そして、この頃『千夜一夜物語』が誕生したと言われる。
文化面について言えば、ジャワ島で世界最大級の仏教遺跡と言われるボロブドゥールが建設されている。
一方、唐では地方の勢力を抑えきれなくなりつつある。
875年には塩の密売商人が反乱を起こし、唐は大打撃を受けた。
滅亡へのカウントダウンが開始される。
894年に菅原道真が遣唐使の廃止を主張したのは、理にかなったものだった。
日本では、藤原氏が台頭してきた頃である。

姫路城の優美な姿は圧巻だ。

大天守までの道のりは、大きな左回りの螺旋を描く曲輪配置となっている。
熱湯を敵に注いだり、弓や鉄砲を使うための小窓も見られ、防御設備も抜かりない。
そして、明治時代の廃条例や戦争による空襲などの危機を免れてきた点は驚異的である。
一方、フランスのモン・サン・ミシェルもまた神秘的な美を誇る。
この聖なる山も一筋縄ではなく、修道院と要塞が融合した独特の姿を示しており、宗教戦争やフランス革命などの危機とともに変遷してきた歴史を持っている。
岩山の斜面には、巡礼者のための店や宿も見られる。
どちらの遺産も紆余曲折を経ていっそう力強く、見た瞬間に息を呑む巨大な美を全身から放っている。

８世紀はイスラーム勢力の拡大が著しい。
西に向けては北アフリカを支配後、711年にイベリア半島を征服している。
そして、732年にフランク王国のカール＝マルテルと激突する。
この戦いにフランク王国は勝利し、西ヨーロッパのキリスト教世界は防衛された。
東に目を向ければ、中国では玄宗が即位し、唐帝国が全盛期を迎えつつあった。
しかし、751年にタラス河畔の戦いでアッバース朝に敗北している。
この時、製紙法が西アジアやヨーロッパに伝わることになる。
755年に安史の乱が起き、唐の繁栄にも陰りが見え始める。
世界ではイスラーム勢力の台頭を感じる世紀であった。

沖ノ島は古代より神聖視されてきた島である。
この島にある宗像大社には航海の安全を祈る女神が祀られている。
古代祭祀の痕跡が残され、銅鏡や金製指輪など約8万点もの奉納品が出土している。
百済との交流を深めていた大和朝廷は、この地域の豪族の航海技術を頼った。
九州本土には、この豪族の古墳も見られる。
一方、カンボジアのアンコールの遺跡ではヒンドゥー教・仏教の世界観が表現されている。
「女の砦」を意味するバンテアイ・スレイというヒンドゥー教寺院跡には、女神デヴァター像が祀られている。
「東洋のモナリザ」と言われ、精巧で美しい彫刻が全面に施されている女神像だ。
かつて、フランスの作家がこの像を盗み出そうとしたこともあった。
女神は人を惹きつける。

７世紀の世界を見ていこう。
そして、632年にはイスラーム教によるアラブ帝国が創始される。
この新しい一神教は征服活動を伴いながら、急速に広がった。
快進撃といってよく、642年にニハーヴァンドの戦いでササン朝ペルシアを滅ぼしている。
一方、中国では高祖が618年に唐を建国し、都の長安は大いに栄えた。
また、玄奘がインドへの大旅行から帰国し、仏教の経典を多数持ち帰った。
彼は隋に対して対等外交を主張した。
しかし、その後の唐の国力は圧倒的であった。
660年の白村江の戦いで日本は唐と新羅の連合軍と戦い、敗れている。
日本は政治的な臣属関係を唐と結んでいるわけではなかったが、朝貢を行い、唐の先進文化を貪欲に取り入れた。
そして、日本も中央集権国家モデルの構築を目指していた。

島根県の石見銀山はかつて世界の銀生産の約3分の1を産出したという。
ヨーロッパ人にとっても日本は注目の的であったろう。

戦国時代には山の領有をめぐって3氏が争った。
銀の積出港を持ち、温泉もある。
一方、ペルーのポトシ銀山も世界最大級の銀鉱脈を持つ。
17世期半ばまでに世界の銀産出量の半分を産出し、銀は世界中に流通した。
この両山は世界各国の流通基盤を変革させたという意味で、震源地である。

この聖堂はビザンツ様式の代表例とされる。
ビザンツ帝国はササン朝ペルシアの最盛期の王ホスロー1世との抗争を繰り返した。
一方、アジアでは581年に隋が中国を統一している。
538年頃、日本に仏教が伝来したとされる。
強国の台頭が見られる時期である。
